Wellsophyllia Coral
How do I care for Wellsophyllia?
Sand bed in a calm spot with indirect light. Same rules as trachyphyllia - never on rockwork. Find a shaded area where they won't get blasted by flow.
These are basically the folded version of open brains. They love being fed - mysis, reef roids, whatever meaty stuff you've got. Feed once or twice a week and watch those colours pop. Some of the rainbow wellsos out there are absolutely mental.
Same as trachys - don't put them on rocks! That folded tissue is delicate and needs soft substrate underneath. Also too much light washes out the colours.
Nice plump inflation with those characteristic folds looking fleshy and full. Vibrant colours and a good feeding response when you drop food on them. If they're looking deflated or pale, check your flow isn't too strong.
Are Wellsophyllia suitable for beginners?
With some experience, yes. They're not the hardest coral to keep, but you'll want stable parameters and a bit of research under your belt first.
Plenty of newer hobbyists keep Wellsophyllia successfully - just make sure your tank is cycled properly and you're testing your water regularly. We'd suggest having at least a few months of reef keeping experience before trying these.

How should I acclimate Wellsophyllia when they arrive?
Important: DO NOT drip acclimate coral!
Float the sealed bag in your tank for 20-30 minutes to match the temperature. Then open the bag and place the coral straight into your tank (or dip first if you prefer).
Place low on the sandbed for the first few days so the piece can get used to your tank conditions and lighting.
Why no drip acclimation? Some ammonia buildup can occur during shipping, but due to the pH drop in the bag, it becomes non-toxic. If you slowly add tank water with higher pH, that ammonia becomes toxic again and can harm or kill the coral. Temperature matching is all you need.
Don't panic if polyps are retracted at first - they often take a day or two to fully open up after shipping.
